New Capital Flows into Real Estate Industry at Dizzying Pace

(Mountain Lakes, NJ, March 2, 2018) — Venture capital, that smart money traditionally earmarked for Silicon Valley tech startups, has begun flooding into the residential real estate industry.

The obvious question: What will become of all that cash? Will the disruptive upstarts raising venture capital manage to topple the industry’s established players? Or will they flame out as the hot business models of the past did?

The March issue of industry newsletter Real Estate Broker’s Insider looks at where the money is coming from, where it’s going, and the impact industry experts and broker/owners are anticipating.

Real estate guru Stefan Swanepoel, for one, is sanguine about the disruptive potential of the new species of startups. He notes that Amazon changed the retail business but didn’t bankrupt Wal-Mart or Home Depot.

As for the real estate disrupters, yes, some might succeed by finding better ways of running brokerages. And, no, they’re unlikely to put RE/MAX or the Realogy brands or Keller Williams out of business in the near future.

"Are they going to feel the pinch? Yes," Swanepoel says. "But feeling the pinch is a long way from closing down."

What is certain is that acquisitions and innovation are likely to accelerate in 2018.

More on the money flowing into the real estate industry and the pressure on traditional models appears in the March issue of Real Estate Broker’s Insider newsletter.
