Best Practices in Social Networking for Residential Real Estate Agents

Real estate coaches say that too many Realtors are killing their credibility with spam and shameless self-promotion.

(Boonton, NJ, October 15, 2009) — Twitter is atwitter with tweets from real estate professionals. The real estate groups on Facebook and LinkedIn are bursting with new members.

At recent real estate conferences, sessions on social networking have been packed, says editor, Jeff Ostrowski, in the October issue of industry newsletter Real Estate Broker's Insider.

Social networking was a major theme at the Florida Association of Realtors conference in August and also ranks high on the agenda at the California Association of Realtors' Expo this month.

All this intense interest proves that many brokers and agents see Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn as low-cost, high-return marketing outlets.

Yet the influx of Realtors into social networking also illustrates a troubling point: Many just don't get the nuances of these new communication platforms. If you want your agents to successfully use social networks, you must coach them not to the commit the common mistake of placing business above relationships.

Real estate coaches Matthew Ferrara and Rich Rogala comment in Real Estate Broker's Insider that they see way too many Realtors killing their credibility with spam and shameless self-promotion. "It's the quickest way to get ignored," Rogala says.
