Real Estate Broker Attracts Younger Agents with Work-Life Balance

As the average age of a residential real estate agent approaches 55, agencies are seeking ways to appeal to a younger agent. Work-life balance is key.

(Boonton, NJ, May 14, 2010) — As the parents of young children, California brokers Vanessa Bergmark and Kevin Hamilton understand the challenges of balancing the demands of family and work.

So the business partners decided to make their company, Red Oak Realty, friendly to new parents and to other agents seeking work-life balance.

In the May issue of industry newsletter, Real Estate Broker's Insider, Bergmark and Hamilton explain their goals and how they put them into action.

To help agents manage the round-the-clock grind of evening appointments and weekend showings, Red Oak encourages agents to form teams.

The idea is to take "co-listings" that let teammates share weekend and night duties, to take vacations, or to take family leave without killing their sales careers.

To sweeten the pot, Red Oak revamped the way splits are calculated for teams.

"In the past, teams were not treated as one individual," Bergmark says. "They were treated as two individuals. We're treating them as one person so it moves them up and gives them a more competitive split. We're actually giving them slightly more than they had been paid in the past."
