Syndicator Bashing Continues as Brokers Ditch Zillow and Trulia

To syndicate or not to syndicate? The debate that has roiled the residential real estate industry for years continues. The widely divergent opinions of industry leaders show the argument is unlikely to be settled soon.

(Boonton, NJ, February 28, 2014) — Crye-Leike Real Estate Services cofounder Harold Crye could hardly be madder at Zillow and Trulia. He’s yanking listings from the aggregation sites and publicly accusing the companies of extortion.

Crye-Leike Vice President Steve Brown lists the usual reasons: The aggregators’ listings are stale and often wrong.

What’s more, the sites give consumers the impression that a listing belongs to whichever agent pays for the most prominent placement.

Intriguingly, Crye-Leike’s agents don’t seem upset about the end of its data sharing. As company leaders announced the move at Crye-Leike’s offices throughout the Southeast, agents responded enthusiastically, sometimes with standing ovations.

In the March issue of Real Estate Broker’s Insider Zillow counters Crye-Leike’s claims and offers solutions, which it says “ensure listing accuracy.”
